The woodcarvers hot spot

Val Gardena/Gröden is known for various highlights and special features. For skiing and the Saslong World Cup slope, for example. For impressive views of the Dolomites. And for the art of wood carving and unique handcrafted products. This art is a centuries-old tradition.

How it all began

The art of wood carving in Val Gardena/Gröden began around 1600, when people had to spend long winter evenings indoor. Using rudimentary tools, they gave blocks of wood a new shape and at the same time expressed their faith and attitude to life with their sculptures. As early as the 18th century, wood carving was one of the main occupations in Val Gardena, and numerous arts and drawing schools trained young artists who went on to carve crucifixes, Madonnas, and nativity scenes. To this day, Val Gardena/Gröden is known for its large number of artists. Art and craft exhibitions are regularly organised on various occasions.
